SHBG
Sex hormone binding globulin (SHBG) binds various steroid hormones and acts as their carrier in the blood. It is synthetized by liver and the rate of synthesis and secretion in plasma is modulated by hormonal and metabolic factors. Thus the determination of SHBG concentration gives the information on the endocrine and metabolic status of the patient and can be used as an aid in diagnosis and monitoring of androgen excess and insufficiency states in and as an aid in monitoring patients on sex-steroid and anti-androgen therapy.
