5a-Dihydrotestosterone (5a-DHT) is an androgen, which is required for the development and maintenance of primary and secondary sexual characteristics in males, and is responsible for the development of secondary sexual hair in females. Its determination can be used as an aid in diagnosis of androgen-related endocrine disorders, including 5α-reductase deficiency.
