Cortisol is the main glucocorticoid hormone secreted by the adrenal cortex. There are diurnal variations of serum cortisol levels reaching the highest levels in the morning. Cortisol affects carbohydrate, protein and lipid metabolism as well as electrolyte balance. Cortisol measurement can be used as aid in diagnosis of adrenal related disorders, such as Cushing’s syndrome and Addison’s disease.
This assay enables the determination of cortisol not only in serum, plasma and urine, but also in saliva.
