D4-Androstenedione is an androgen produced in the adrenal cortex, the ovary and the testes. There is a circadian rhythm of secretion with highest concentrations in the morning. The amount of D4-androstenedione also varies during the menstrual cycle, with a maximum value in mid-cycle. D4-Androstenedione is measured in the investigation of hirsutism in women, abnormalities of puberty in children, and in the monitoring of congenital adrenal hyperplasia.
