ACTH

Adrenocorticotropic hormone is a polypeptide secreted by the basophile cells of anterior pituitary. ACTH stimulates adrenal production of steroids, particularly cortisol. ACTH determination is useful to reveal abnormalities of hypothalamus-pituitary-adrenal axis, it can be used as an aid in diagnosis of hypercortisolism and hypocortisolism.
