Progesterone

The major sites of the production of progesterone in women are the corpus luteum during the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, and the placenta. Measurement of serum progesterone is used to confirm ovulation and to provide an indicator of adequate luteinization. The assay of progesterone is also indicated in men and children, when an enzymatic defect in steroid biosynthesis is suspected.
