Thyroxine (T4) is a hormone produced by the thyroid gland. The concentration of total thyroxine in plasma or serum is an indicator of thyroid function. Total thyroxine levels fall during hypothyroidism whereas hyperthyroidism is accompanied by its elevated concentrations. The determination of total triiodothyronine is intended to be used as an aid in diagnosis of thyroid disorders.
